Leading public sector event to explore the future of HR

Press release – 30 October 2018

A major event in Manchester, led by key decision-makers and stakeholders involved in people management, workforce issues and recruitment, will provide a platform for leaders and professionals to discuss how staffing and retention can help shape the future landscape of the public sector.
The workforce in the public sector has shrunk considerably in recent years amidst frozen wages and the ability to recruit and retain talented staff. Local government employment was down by 9,000 in last year, to 2.104 million, the lowest since comparable records began in 1999*.
A series of discussions at the Public Sector Solutions Expo will seek to address how overcoming economic, psychological and organisational challenges is the key to the future success of the public sector. Headline panel debates include:

• Simone Roche MBE, the founder of Northern Power Women, talking about attracting talent and retaining it through training
• Alexandra Elmywood, director at The Growth Company and Jeanette Jackson, biochemist and sports scientist at The Manchester Stress Institute, discussing mentally healthy workplaces
• Karen Grave, president at the Public Service People Managers’ Association, talking about the science of wellbeing and performance and with David D’Souza, membership director the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development, discussing cross sector collaboration, inclusion and diversity and the future of work

The Public Sector Solutions Expo, is taking place on 20 November at Manchester Central, and is free to attend for those working in the sector.
Simone Roche MBE, founder of Northern Power Futures, Northern Power Women and partner of the Northern Powerhouse, said:

“It’s worrying to see how much the workforce within the public sector has shrunk recently. I’m looking forward to taking part in this expo and discussing what we can do to help improve this for the future.

“During my panel session I’ll be debating how targeted training and education has the capacity to build an organisation up and the impact it can have on a region’s long-term prospects. I’ll also be sharing some practical advice and tips on attracting, fostering and retaining talent, and how we can raise employability levels within the public sector.”

Alexandra Elmywood, commercial director at Organisational Improvement, part of The Growth Company, said:

“Only when we are in control of our own psychological and emotional wellbeing can we start to support the wellbeing of others. My talk will explore how management teams can create happy, healthy and productive environments for staff, by developing confidence and capability in supporting people effectively.”

Corby Ganesh, portfolio director for the Public Sector Solutions Expo, said:

“This section of the Expo is aimed at HR professionals in the public sector wanting to explore developing a more engaged workforce, empowering employees to undertake training and developing a long-term career in the sector. Come along to hear from leading speakers in the field of recruitment and join in debates about upskilling, retention, agile working, supporting transformation, wellbeing, contribution to social value, equality and leadership.”

Throughout the day the Expo will focus on the delivery of better public services procurement through a series of panel discussions, lectures and debates. The show, will also discuss cross-sector collaboration, the potential impact of digital technology and automation and effective cost-saving measures in the public sector.
