Network Rail prioritising network improvements
Network Rail has made the decision to put some its largest projects on hold over the next five year period, in a bid to inject more cash into maintaining its current network. The rail and track operator has published its plan, expecting the period to last from 2019 to 2024.
The plan could see the company spending up to £47bn, with the amount previously set aside for new schemes dropping by 33%, and the total for current improvements increasing by 25%. A total of £18.5bn will go into the operation and maintenance side of the business and a similar amount will be allocated for renewing and replacing old infrastructure like signalling systems. During the process the company also hopes to increase the number of female employees by 50%. Read more here
