Councils spending at least £863m a year on energy
According to new research, local authorities are spending over £863 with the Big Six energy companies every year. A freedom of information request filed by supplier Bulb discovered that 90% of local authorities are supplied by one of the major oil and gas companies, and that no authority has switched to a renewable supplier.
Perhaps the most interesting find was the large variation in what councils are paying, suggesting that huge scope exists to reduce energy bills if councils switched to cheaper and more eco-friendly alternatives. Despite many councils expressing their support for renewables – many are not aware of or committed to finding alternative suppliers that could in the long run generate substantial savings.
